India has achieved a major milestone in social welfare as the country’s social protection coverage has crossed the one billion mark, bringing more than one hundred crore citizens under the national social protection framework. Union Labour and Employment Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya highlighted the achievement in a social media post, stating that India’s social protection coverage has increased significantly from 19 per cent in 2015 to 68.4 per cent in 2026.

Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya said the expansion reflects the commitment of the Modi government towards inclusive development and ensuring that the benefits of progress reach all sections of society. The growth in coverage marks a significant transformation in India’s welfare system, strengthening support mechanisms for citizens across the country.

India’s social protection framework has expanded through several welfare programmes designed to provide financial security, healthcare support, and food assistance to millions of people. These initiatives have contributed to improving livelihoods, strengthening economic security, and reducing poverty by extending essential support to vulnerable sections of society.

The increase in social protection coverage highlights India’s continued efforts to build a comprehensive welfare system focused on inclusive growth and social security. The achievement of covering more than one billion citizens represents a significant step towards ensuring broader access to essential services and financial protection for people across the nation.
